Accessibility
DeafHive is built for the Deaf community, so getting accessibility right matters to us. Here’s how the site stands today and how to get help.
Statement prepared: 19 June 2026
Our commitment
DeafHive exists to serve Deaf people, so we want everyone to be able to use the site, whatever technology or assistive tools they rely on. We aim to meet the international WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standard, and we treat accessibility as part of every change we make — not an afterthought.
How accessible this site is
We’ve built the site to be usable for as many people as possible. In particular:
- content is provided in British Sign Language (BSL) as well as written English;
- you can navigate the whole site with a keyboard, and there’s a “skip to content” link on every page;
- pages use clear headings and structure so screen readers can read them in a sensible order;
- we aim for strong colour contrast and visible focus when you tab through the page;
- text resizes and the layout reflows on phones, tablets and when you zoom in.
Known limitations
We’re honest about where we’re not perfect yet. We’re aware that:
- some content is submitted by the community — occasionally an image or logo may be missing a text description until we add one during review;
- embedded videos (such as YouTube) use a third-party player we don’t fully control;
We’re working to fix issues as we find them. If you spot something, please tell us (below) — it really helps.
Getting content another way, or in BSL
If you need information from DeafHive in a different format, or you’d like something explained in BSL, get in touch and we’ll do our best to help. Contact us at community@signingworks.co.uk.
Reporting an accessibility problem
If you find a part of the site that’s hard to use, please let us know at community@signingworks.co.uk. Tell us the page and what went wrong, and we’ll aim to reply within 5 working days.
If you’re not happy with our response
We’re a community service, not a public-sector body, but we still take the Equality Act 2010 seriously. If you’ve raised an accessibility problem and aren’t happy with how we’ve handled it, you can get free, independent advice from the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) at equalityadvisoryservice.com.
